Principal Investigator
Dr. Corina’s research focuses on understanding the neural bases of higher cognitive function, specifically language and memory. He is interested in neurobiological models of language processing and elucidating the degrees of plasticity within systems related to language and memory, drawing insights from the comparisons of signed and spoken languages. Dr. Corina’s work includes developmental studies of children learning language, studies of deaf and hearing college students and neuropsychological studies of language breakdown in aging populations. On-going studies explore language and human actions processing in deaf users of American Sign Language and hearing users of spoken language. A current interest is in the expression of cross-modal plasticity in children with cochlear implants. Dr. Corina’s research encompasses psychology, linguistics and neuroscience.
Research Staff
Elizabeth is a fifth year doctoral student in Psychology using EEG to study speech recognition and semantic processing in deaf and typical hearing children. She is also interested in the role of audiovisual integration during speech perception. Outside of research, she likes running, cooking, and listening to music.
Tanya is a PhD student in Psychology, broadly interested in speech perception. Her current project is dedicated to investigation of effects of cross-modal plasticity on speech perception in children with cochlear implants.
Brennan Gonering
Brennan is a PhD candidate in linguistics, interested in the neurobiology of syntax; their dissertation examines the connection between long-term memory and different syntactic knowledge. When not teaching or researching, Brennan enjoys playing video games, baking, and being involved in activism.
Jenna DiStefano
Jenna is a doctoral student in the developmental psychology area. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, minoring in ASL/Deaf Studies and Education. Before graduate school, she worked as a lab manager for Dr. Duane Watson at Vanderbilt University, supporting studies relating to language and cognition. Her current research interests are focused on understanding the link between early language experience and cognitive development in hearing and deaf children. Specifically, she is interested in how language, both spoken and signed, can shape domain-general cognitive mechanisms such as statistical learning and executive function. When not doing research, Jenna enjoys cycling, climbing, crafting, and spending time with her cat.
Jamie Herron Lee
Jamie is a fourth year doctoral student in the Linguistics Department. Her research interests focus on the characterization and development of second language and bi/multilingual proficiency in the brain. She enjoys cooking, DIY projects, and relaxing at home with her husband and cats.
